The story takes place in a plutocratic futuristic universe.
Charlie is an Hybrid made of Human and Alien genes. She was changed during the unsuccessful Colonial Wars also known as the "wars of shame", which took place on multiple uncharted planets.
Today, back on Earth, she is a respected veteran among the army and police forces, but an outcast among the people.
She's on re integration protocol and working with the FBI. At one point, a new murder is made, which seems to be linked with a series of other ones.
Clues indicate that they might be the work of a suspiciously gifted individual.
